Jason Derulo has promised to give a "high energy" performance on New Year's Eve.

The 'Fight For You' singer will perform alongside all-star acts including Selena Gomez, J Cole and Mac Miller as part of MTV's New Year's Eve Party.

Derulo said that he is looking forward to being part of such a momentous occasion and can't wait to hit the stage to perform some of his biggest hits.

"I cannot think of another way to bring the New Year in than with MTV. I'm excited - New Year, new beginnings," he told MTV News.

"I'll be doing 'It Girl' and 'Don't Wanna Go Home', a medley of the two. [There will] be a lot of high-energy dancing. It's going to be a crazy show, I hope you guys are tuning in because lots of great performers. You have different flavours from all around."

In October, Derulo announced that he would embark upon his biggest ever UK arena tour in February and March of 2012.

Video: Is Iowa Ron Paul's to lose?

>> exander in iowa , thank you very much.

>>> chuck todd is on the road in iowa as well, in mason city . chuck, good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, matt.

>> we talk about the slugfest and it will continue over the next six days. one of the reasons is so many people in iowa say they haven't made up their minds yet. what do they expect to hear in the next six days that they haven't heard in tv ads, radio ads , seen in literature and heard in these 13 gop debates?

>> reporter: i think part of it is for iowans they like to get wooed and they haven't been wooed in this cycle than in previous cycles. only in the last ten days has iowa to me looked like iowa , where you have candidates crisscrossing the state. there's sort of three chunks of voters to woo in iowa , mainstream establishment republican type and you have your evangelicals, the second group and this new group of voters that ron paul has been wooing, that middle group, evangelicals who helped dictate the winner or perceived winner out of this before and there are so many candidates, matt, trying to appeal to that sort of one-third of what could be the caucus electorate, and because that's splintered still, that's where there seems to be so much indecision.

>> this professor in peter's piece said iowans are looking for someone to inspire them, get them engaged, get them enthusiastic. any indication in polling who seems to be filling that space?

>> reporter: well, no and i think who was filling it, the reason you had different leaders, the latest newt gingrich was firing up conservatives, making the case at a debate that said i'm going to go directly after president obama , maybe do it a little bit more personally than a mitt romney . all of it seems to be this attempt to find a contrast to mitt romney . mitt romney more soft-spoken, mitt romney somebody the conservatives are still trying to figure out, is he really one of them, and that's what's missing here. ron paul inspires a chunk of voters and right now he seems to be the one guy that's inspiring some folks but they're not traditional republicans.

>> if you look at the polls he's going to have a pretty big day on tuesday. if he wins in iowa , and a lot of people think he could, is there a path to victory for ron paul past iowa ?

>> reporte

>> reporter: there, there's not. the caucus states are where you can do well. you can bring in non-republicans and register them that day as republicans and he has this appeal to independents and new voters and things like that. look, this is a game of where does mitt romney finish and where does newt gingrich or even in an upset a rick perry finish. if any of those finish above mitt romney that are not named ron paul will be the actual winner.

>> if mitt romney finishes second to ron paul it's still a victory because a, we didn't put all that much time and energy into iowa and b this would be, making these words up, "it's just ron paul ."

>> reporter: yes and no -- more importantly no conservative. ron paul doesn't have the appeal to the evangelical conservatives or foreign policy conservatives or economic conservatives. you have romney coming out here with a second place of steam, if it's behind ron paul going into new hampshire and a bunch of candidates trying to make a last stand in south carolina about ten days after new hampshire and that could be it.

>> chuck todd in iowa , thanks very much as always. it's

Oil jobs the new gold as thousands join North Dakota rush

In the icy parking lot of the Wal-Mart in Williston, N.D., the next wave of economic refugees is washing in, counting down the hours until they can turn their back on a past they?d like to forget.

On one chilly day in December, there?s the family from North Carolina, which has crammed mom, dad, teenage son and two dogs into an old Winnebago, driving some 3,000 kilometres in hopes of finding work. And there is Eric Larsson, who has come more than 1,000 kilometres from eastern Idaho in a truck loaded with tools, looking for a job after his position vanished ? along with his house ? three years ago. He?s pulling a trailer he just bought so he can have a place to sleep.

More related to this story

?I pretty much spent $10,000 on a wing and a prayer to get here,? he says.

These people, and thousands of others whose stories bear a striking similarity, have come to join the frenzy ? by plane, by ratty truck, by train. Williston, with a population of around 20,000, was a quiet North Dakota town, surrounded by oil fields that had been in decline for decades. Now, it is the heart of the Bakken, a new oil play that has abruptly woken one of the sleepiest states in the Union, transforming North Dakota into an energy heavyweight.

It has also made Williston, whose surrounding county now has the lowest unemployment rate in the entire country, a new destination for America?s jobless, homeless and would-be rich.

There is the Louisiana driller, who brought an entire crew with him after discovering he could boost his pay by $15 an hour by heading north. There is the family who came with an infant and a tent, until someone took pity on them ahead of a major snowstorm. There is the man who sought refuge inside a clothing rack at Wal-Mart, having no other place to stay.

There is Scotty Lail, who watched the bank seize his truck, his fifth-wheel RV trailer and his house after he and 3,500 others were laid off from a Freightliner manufacturing plant. He came to Williston to rebuild, starting with a credit rating that, he hopes, will soon be sufficiently repaired to let him back into home ownership.

?You gotta go to where the money is at,? he says.

Even the jet set is seeking a Bakken salvation. Wealthy hedge fund managers and private investors have left New York for Williston in Learjets, drawn by hopes of sinking millions into land that can be developed for a return that seems more certain than anything the financial markets might provide.

Williston is an undeniable boomtown, a modern-day Dawson City or San Francisco ? the gold-rush analogies are inevitable. But in many ways, the best comparison lies just over a thousand kilometres north. Williston is America?s Fort McMurray ? down to many of the incredible details.

In Williston, like Fort Mac a few years ago, fast-food joints post lunch-time hourly rates that are double the minimum wage. McDonald?s offers hiring bonuses. Its drive-through ? recently widened into two lanes ? is so busy, the line of trucks often spills out onto the street. A local gym has lineups 10 deep for its men?s showers, as the employed homeless turn wherever they can.

Temporary accommodations have sprung up like weeds. Permits have been issued for 9,400 spots in ?man-camps,? the local term for mobile-home-style worker camps that have been growing so fast the county issued a six-month moratorium this fall on any additions. Existing hotels are jammed. Two hotels opened this spring. Six new ones are under construction, and oil service companies are booking entire floors before they are even built.

Drive an hour in any direction from Williston, and the bare hills are being cleared to accommodate new hotels, new camps and, often, mini RV camps in the backyard of farm residences. At a going rate of $500 to $1,000 a month just to park and plug in a camper, there?s good money to be made for a landowner that doesn?t mind a dozen new neighbours.

In an extreme housing crisis, prices have ballooned. Single-family family homes that sold for $40,000 five years ago now go for $150,000. Some single-bedroom apartments that were going for $500 a month now fetch $2,000. One commercial property worth $50,000 not long ago now leases for $110,000 ? a year.

Deer find safe home at FBI firing range, academy

Call it a playground for Bambi and G-Men, where imaginary criminals are hunted and deer are the spectators.

The 547-acre FBI Academy, where some of America's best marksmen fire off more than 1 million bullets every month, happens to be one of the safest places for deer during hunting season.

The property on the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., is home to some of the FBI's most elite forces and training programs as well as a de facto wildlife refuge where deer, fox, wild turkeys, groundhogs and vultures roam fearless and free.

In recent years, a black bear was spotted running across a parking lot, and a groundhog cornered an FBI agent coming out of the cafeteria, hoping to score some human food, FBI spokesman Kurt Crawford said. Turkey vultures are often seen perched atop the 500,000 square foot national crime lab where the FBI analyzes evidence, including the remains of the former al-Qaida leader in Iraq.

The wild animals are as much a fixture at the academy as the hostage rescue team and criminal profilers.

The most common furry friends on the sprawling campus some 30 miles outside Washington are the deer, a regular at the shooting ranges, driving courses and physical training trails.

On a December afternoon, deer grazed above one of the academy's 16 practice shooting ranges. They stood just 15 feet away from the paper targets. Nearby, shots popped loudly from a Colt M4 Carbine rifle, and the white-tailed deer did not flinch.

"They're pretty immune to the sound," said Sean Boyle, supervisory special agent bomb technician and principal firearms instructor for the Critical Incident Response Group based at the academy. The deer typically graze on top of the berm, about 15 feet away from the targets and rarely go directly in the line of fire. Boyle said he doesn't recall an instance where a deer was shot accidentally.

"It's like they think, 'We've pushed the limit for this far, and all our generations have pushed the limit for this far,'" Boyle said. "They're just so docile around here. They don't know what a gun is."

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries does not keep direct tabs on the deer population at the FBI academy, but a spokeswoman said statewide the deer population has remained about the same over the past decade, partly because of regulated hunting. Licensed deer hunters are allowed on parts of the Marine Corps base but not at the academy where the FBI does not hunt its animals.

At the FBI Academy, the deer have even become part of the training in some of the driving courses, said Tim Moles, the supervisory special agent who oversees the Tactical and Emergency Vehicle Operations Center, where recruits learn to avoid crashing their cars and conduct surveillance without being spotted.

The deer are convenient when recruits learn to avoid collisions, Moles said. "There's times when it seems like they're playing chicken with us," Moles said. "We respect them because they can do damage. We'd rather avoid all deer stories in this end of the academy."

For the most part, the deer have stayed out of trouble. Twice, however, deer have eaten freshly-planted pansies at the academy's 9/11 memorial courtyard, Crawford said. Eventually a fence was built to keep the flowers off limits.

Deer have been known to interrupt physical training, too.

"We've had the deer walk across the middle of the track during the 300-meter sprint," said Susann Dreiling, unit chief of the academy's physical training unit.

To become an agent, recruits must pass a physical fitness test. They are scored on how fast they can run and how many push-ups and sit-ups they perform. Sometimes, training will involve running a quarter-mile path along the lake area of the academy, stopping for push-ups, running some more and breaking to box, Dreiling said.

During these exercises, a mother and her fawns are often close by.

"They just stand there and watch as if they're evaluating them," Dreiling said, "just like the instructors are."

Foxconn to expand iPhone production facility, set to become world's largest (Digital Trends)

iphone-4-vs-4sWith Apple?s iPhone recently coming to market in 21 more countries and the likely launch of a new smartphone model from the Cupertino company in 2012, it may come as little surprise that Apple supplier Foxconn is planning to expand its Zhengzhou production facility in China, a move that will make it the biggest smartphone manufacturing plant in the world.

A China Daily report (via Apple Insider) says Foxconn will double the size of its factory, situated in central China?s Henan province, at a cost of just over $1 billion.

The expansion will see Foxconn increase the number of production lines at the facility to 95, with the aim of bringing in $20 billion in sales revenue in 2012.

Foxconn?s Zhengzhou plant currently employs 130,000 people who help to produce 200,000 iPhones a day. Foxconn is currently the world?s biggest electronics manufacturer, employing just over a million people, mostly in China. The company makes products for a number of companies besides Apple, including Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Dell, Nintendo and Microsoft.

Recent reports have indicated that Apple?s iPhone is losing market share in some parts of the world, namely continental Europe. However, it continues to sell well in, for example, the US, UK and Australia.

While the slow down in sales can be largely attributed to consumers opting for cheaper devices during what is a challenging economic period, there are probably a fair few who are holding off purchasing an iPhone 4S in the hope that Apple will launch a new iPhone 5 device in early 2012, possibly with a larger screen among other design improvements. Foxconn, whose new factory will be up and running some time next year, will certainly be hoping the next iteration of Apple?s popular smartphone proves a big hit with consumers.

N. Korea: Military Generals Real Rulers, not Kim Jong Un (Time.com)

The policy under Kim Jong Il, North Korea's late Dear Leader, could not have had a name that was more straightforward: "military first politics." For most of Kim's 17-year reign as dictator, North Korea's military -- the Korean People's Army, or KPA -- got pretty much whatever it wanted. Even during the crippling famine, which killed tens of thousands in the late '90s, food was diverted to the military. Better a soldier with a full stomach, even if almost everyone else were starving, Kim seemed to think. "His position toward the military was one of weakness," says Christopher Hill, formerly the chief U.S. negotiator to the six-party nuclear talks.

Little wonder, then, that nearly everyone who tries to figure out what is happening in the world's most isolated regime believes that, in the wake of Kim's sudden death on Dec. 17, it is the military brass who will be firmly in control of the country, even as the young Kim Jong Un formally becomes what the Koreans call the suryong (supreme leader). "The military," says Hill, "will clearly be a critical factor in determining whether the [Kim] family dynasty survives." (See "After Kim Jong Il: A Look at the Kim Family Tree.")

Some analysts have argued that the North Korean brass were already deeply resentful that Kim Jong Un, in his late 20s, was last year given four stars and a position as vice chairman of the Central Military Committee "without having served a day in the military," as Victor Cha, who ran Asia policy on George W. Bush's National Security Council, recently put it. "Such a system," Cha says, "simply cannot hold."

This may overstate the regime's fragility, precisely because it underrates just how deeply rooted the Kim family dynasty is in North Korea and how deeply the KPA's interests are aligned with its continuation. The key man to watch, analysts say, is Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho, chief of the General Staff in Pyongyang and, like Kim Jong Un, a chairman of the Central Military Committee, the key military policymaking body in the country. (See pictures of North Koreans mourning the death of Kim Jong Il.)

Ri, 69, is a third-generation elite who over the years established a close relationship with Kim Jong Il, and over the past two yeas was photographed at various public events seated alongside the late Dear Leader. He is also said to be close to Kim's sister as well as his brother-in-law Chang Sung Taek, the man who some believe is now Kim Jong Un's "regent," the power behind the throne who will be calling the shots. Ri is also a graduate of the Kim Il Sung Military Academy, as is Kim Jong Un. Diplomats and intelligence analysts believe there is no scenario under which the young Kim could have been elevated to the position of successor over the past two years without the brass's approval. "He's there because the military officials believe they can control him, at least for several years, and there's no other institution that can hold the place together," says an East Asia?based intelligence official. On Thursday, in fact, Reuters -- quoting an unnamed official with "close ties" to Beijing and Pyongyang -- reported that a "collective leadership'' arrangement has already been agreed to by Kim Jong Un and top military officials. (TIME has been unable to confirm this.) "The military has pledged its allegiance to Kim Jong Un," Reuters quoted its source as saying.

Most likely, that is vice versa. The military's powerful position in North Korean society can hardly be overestimated. Not only is it the overseer of the country's nuclear program -- the ultimate guarantor of Pyongyang's security -- but it is also its largest employer. There are over 1.1 million soldiers in the KPA's five branches, or nearly 20% of the male population between the ages of 17 and 54. It is also, therefore, the country's most powerful economic entity, the largest consumer of goods in the country as well as an exporter of missiles and nuclear technology via the shadowy Second Economic Committee, run by a man about whom little is known in the outside word -- Park Se Bong -- except for his reputed close ties with the ruling Kim clan. "Again, the boy would not be in this position if people like Park had strenuously objected," says the intelligence source. "People are reacting too much to the so-called suddenness of Kim Jong Il's death. This is a guy who had a severe stroke three years ago. For a while there, he looked like death warmed over. The idea that the regime didn't have its ducks in a row, that everyone assumed the Dear Leader was going to be around for another decade or more, doesn't withstand scrutiny. And the regime very much includes the military." (See "Kim Jong Il's Most Dangerous Legacy: A Thriving Nuclear-Export Business.")

It's also critical to understand, a variety of sources say, that North Korea is nothing if not a "kleptocracy," as Hill puts it. The centrality of the KPA means that senior military officials get their beaks wet as much as anyone, calling in favors (economic and otherwise) whenever they choose. Consider a small, recent example: a TIME correspondent visited a newly opened university in Pyongyang a few weeks ago, one in which the students were pretty much all elite, politically connected kids. How connected? Remember that all other college students in North Korea this year were not attending classes; they were out on construction sites, building monuments and memorials in anticipation of the glorious 100th anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birth in April 1912. All college students, that is, except those at the Science and Technology University that TIME visited.

There, a senior officer in the KPA with the rank of general recently visited the school's president, in order to arrange a place for his son. No freezing-cold construction sites for him, 100th anniversary of the Great Leader be damned. Loyalty to the Kim dynasty among the brass extends only so far; they do pretty much what they want, and it may well be that the young, inexperienced Kim Jong Un works for them now, not the other way around.

See pictures of North Korea's heir apparent, Kim Jong Un.

Gen-Y out-investing Gen-X, Boomers

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Who would have thought the I-want-it-now generation would be concerned about the future?

When it comes to retirement savings, Gen Yers are out-investing 30 and ups, according to a survey titled Retirement & Long-Term Savings Habits of Working Americans conducted by TD Ameritrade released this week.

While 85 percent of employees of all ages have savings vehicles such as IRAs or 401(k)s, only 16 percent of Baby Boomers say they are doing all they can to save for retirement by funding such accounts, compared to 25 percent among Millennials. Gen Xers are also doing better than Boomers at 23 percent.

Tough economic times for many working parents during the Great Recession may have spooked younger workers. ?They learned some tough financial lessons from their parents over the past few years and as a result have taken matters into their own hands and are doing what they can to be better prepared,? said Carrie Braxdale, managing director of investor services for TD Ameritrade. ?

Wealth has been a preoccupation for younger workers. One Gen Y survey by Pew Research found, ?eight-in-ten say people in their generation think getting rich is either the most important, or second most important, goal in their lives.?

Their parents may be fostering such ideas by not pushing them to stand on their own feet, and in the end Gen Yers could end up better off financially when they retire than their moms and dads.

Twenty-somethings ?are returning home to live with parents post-college in record numbers,? pointed out Doreen Dodgen-Magee, a licensed psychologist and Gen Y expert. ??In many ways this alone provides them with greater amounts of income to put toward retirement than others who went before them; paying off mortgages, covering rent, buying food, etc.?

Braxdale also believes an emphasis on financial planning and the availability of so much about investing online has?contributed to making the younger generation more money savvy.

But given historically low tax rates, are Gen Y workers being smart by putting so much money in tax-deferred investment vehicles?

?I think it?s always better to save in a tax-free environment,? Braxdale stressed.

So how did saving work out for older workers? According to the survey, Baby Boomers aren?t feeling great about the future:

? 47 percent are somewhat confident they will reach their savings goals in time.
? 27 percent of Boomers are less confident or not confident at all that they will reach their savings goal by the time they are ready to retire.
? 23 percent of Boomers are completely confident they will reach their savings goals in time.

Since parents have a lot of influence on their kids, this reality may be making everyone nervous about the future.

Spending and incomes show weak November gains

(AP) ? Consumers spent at a lackluster rate in November as their incomes barely grew, suggesting that Americans may struggle to keep spending more into 2012.

Consumer spending rose just 0.1 percent in November, matching the modest October increase, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Incomes also rose 0.1 percent. That was the weakest showing since a 0.1 percent decline in August.

Both the spending and income gains fell below expectations. Economists have said that solid increases in spending could boost economic growth in the final three months of what has been a disappointing year.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, called the consumer spending figure disappointing. He said it would probably mean lower economic growth than had been expected.

Rather than grow at an annual rate of up to 3 percent in the October-December quarter, the economy will likely expand at a rate of about 2.5 percent this quarter, Ashworth says. That would still be an improvement from the 1.8 percent growth in the July-September quarter.

Separately, the government said companies' demand for long-lasting manufactured goods rose by the largest amount in four months in November, driven by a jump in orders for planes.

Orders to U.S. factories for durable goods rose 3.8 percent in November. It was the biggest gain since July. But so-called core capital goods, a proxy for business investment spending, dropped for a second straight month. They fell 1.2 percent.

The declines in business capital goods excluding aircraft raise doubts about a pocket of strength for the economy this year. Business investment spending has surged as companies stepped up orders to take advantage of tax breaks that are set to expire at year's end.

While the economy remains vulnerable to threats, particularly a recession in Europe, the job market has improved, lifting hopes for next year.

The government said this week that applications for unemployment benefits fell by 4,000 last week to 364,000. It was the third straight weekly drop. And it pushed applications to the lowest level since April 2008, in the midst of the Great Recession.

The weakness in incomes reflected a decline in wages and salaries, the biggest component of incomes, in November.

The sluggish gain in spending was held back by a 0.3 percent fall in spending on non-durable goods such as food, clothing and gasoline. Spending on durable goods jumped 0.8 percent. It reflected the solid auto sales during the month.

Spending on services, which includes such items as medical treatments and rent, rose a modest 0.1 percent.

After-tax incomes showed no growth in November. The savings rate dipped to 3.5 percent of after-tax incomes, down from 3.6 percent in October. Both months marked the lowest savings rate since late 2007. They show that consumers are having to tap their savings to finance their spending because of the weak income growth.

The small rise in overall consumer spending was puzzling given that other reports have shown solid holiday shopping this season. Those reports had caused many economists to revise up their growth forecasts for the current quarter.

Analysts at JPMorgan think the economy is growing at an annual rate of 3.5 percent in the current October-December quarter. That would be up from 1.8 percent growth in the July-September quarter and would be the best quarterly gain since the spring of 2010.

Economists still expect that growth to be driven by an improvement in consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. Spending rose at a 1.7 percent rate in the third quarter, more than double the second-quarter gain. JPMorgan analysts expect consumer spending to grow at a 3 percent pace in the current quarter.

Even with the spurt of activity at the end of the year, economists think growth for all of 2011 will be a lackluster 1.7 percent.

They had much higher expectations when the year began. But then a spike in gasoline prices held back consumer spending for other items. And the earthquake in Japan disrupted supply chains for auto and electronic parts, dampening factory production in the United States.

Many analysts do not expect growth in 2012 to be significantly better than in 2011. JPMorgan economists predict the economy will expand 1.9 percent in 2012, only slightly better than this year.

Why do objects have mass? The elusive Higgs boson could hold the key.

Scientists at CERN say that they are closing in on demonstrating the existence of the elusive Higgs boson ? the theoretical subatomic particle that could explain why particles have mass.

Scientists hunting for an elusive subatomic particle say they've found "intriguing hints" ? but not definitive proof ? that it exists, narrowing down the search for what is believed to be a basic component of the universe. The researchers added that they hope to reach a conclusion on whether the particle exists by next year.

The latest data show that the mass of the?Higgs?boson ? popularly referred to as the "God particle" ? probably falls in the lower end of the spectrum of mass that can be produced by smashing protons together in the huge Large Hadron Collider, researchers from two independent teams said Tuesday.

The two teams said their data indicates the particle itself may have a mass of between roughly 114 and 130 billion electron volts. One billion electron volts is roughly the mass of a proton. The most likely mass of theHiggs?boson is around 124 to 126 billion electron volts, the teams said.

Until Tuesday, the most likely mass was seen as between 114 and 141 billion electron volts. There is still a small possibility that the?Higgs?could be much more massive and found above 476 billion electron volts, physicists said.

The revelations Tuesday were heavily anticipated by thousands of researchers who hope that the particle, if it exists, can help explain why there is mass in the universe. British physicist Peter?Higgs?and others theorized the particle's existence more than 40 years ago to explain why fundamental particles ? building blocks of the universe ? have mass.

Both of the research teams work at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva. CERN runs the $10-billion Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border, a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel where high energy beams of protons are sent crashing into each other at incredible speeds.

Collisions between protons smashed in the collider produce energy that in turn creates other particles. On rare occasions, this energy could produce the?Higgs?particle ? if it exists.

Fabiola Gianotti, an Italian physicist who heads the team running the ATLAS experiment, said "the hottest region" is in lower mass ranges of the collider. She said there are indications of the?Higgs' existence and that with enough data it could be unambiguously discovered or ruled out next year.

The results rule out several mass or energy ranges for the?Higgs?with a high degree of confidence, Gianotti said.

"The most important result is that we have been able to restrict the most likely mass region to a very narrow range," she said.

Afterward, Guido Tonelli, lead physicist for the team running the separate CMS experiment, outlined findings similar to those of the ATLAS team, saying the particle is most likely found "in the low mass region" among the spectrum of possible?Higgs?masses.

CERN's director-general, Rolf Heuer, said "the window for the?Higgs?mass gets smaller and smaller."

Bahraini police fire tear gas at protesters: witnesses (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Bahraini police fired tear gas and clashed with Shi'ite Muslim protesters on Friday, a day after a man was run over and killed as he fled security forces chasing protesters near Manama, the opposition and a rights group said on Friday.

Tensions have been high in Bahrain since security forces crushed weeks of pro-democracy street protests by the Gulf kingdom's majority Shi'ite Muslims in March.

The police fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse protesters, and several people were injured during the clashes which went on for several hours in different Shi'ite villages outside the capital Manama, said Matar Matar, a member of the Shi'ite al Wefaq political bloc.

Doha-based Al Jazeera television aired footage of riot police firing tear gas at protesters.

"Many were injured because of excessive force," Matar told Reuters over the telephone. "Many have head injuries which indicates there is an intention to hurt them."

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) said demonstrator Ali-Ahmed al-Qassab was trying to flee intelligence officers during clashes between hundreds of mainly Shi'ite protesters and riot police on Thursday when a speeding car hit him.

His funeral will be held on Saturday.

"The regime prefers using force and killing people instead of instituting reforms that the people are asking for," Nabeel Rajab, the head of BCHR, told Reuters.

An interior ministry spokesman could not be reached for comment.

TALKS STALLED

Protesters took to the streets in February demanding a bigger role for elected representatives and less power for ruling al-Khalifa family, who are Sunni Muslims. Some Shi'ite groups sought an end to the monarchy altogether.

Bahrain hosts the U.S. Fifth Fleet and faces Shi'ite giant Iran on the other side of the Gulf. Iran has denied Bahraini government accusations it has incited the protests.

A government-appointed commission of international jurists found evidence of systematic abuses against detained protesters.

There has been no progress on talks between the government and opposition groups on political reform, and sectarian tensions continue to dog the Gulf Arab island state.

Also on Thursday, police detained Zainab al-Khawaja, a human rights activist and daughter of a prominent opposition leader, after she joined the protesters, many of whom chanted slogans against King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, Rajab said.

97% The Muppets

It would be easy to see The Muppets as a needless addition to a worn out franchise or a cash-in on sentimentality or the fact that anything deemed "family-appropriate" will make millions Thanksgiving weekend. While all of that is completely reasonable, even probable; the simple truth is that The Muppets is a good movie. I may get shot for saying this, but at times it almost surpasses it's source material. It's stupid, idiotic, loud, and colorful; but in all the right ways. It still has the dry, sardonic humor that has been at the core of all Muppet projects, but overall this just seems a bit sweeter and more optimistic overall. Normally, song and dance numbers in kids movies annoy the hell out of me - I honestly do not think that there has been a good children's musical since The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast. (Okay, Color's of the Wind isn't that bad either, but still..) Anyway, I really, really loved the song and dance numbers here. Overall, there were very few things that I did not love about this movie. It was uplifting and sentimental, but in a good way. It kind of makes me feel bad for being such a grouchy cynic at times.

FBI Head Denies 'Fast and Furious' Cover-Up, Challenges Darrell Issa's Theory

WASHINGTON -- FBI Director Robert Mueller denied that his agency attempted to cover up evidence related to Operation Fast and Furious, denouncing Rep. Darrell Issa's (R-Calif.) theory that there was a third gun at the murder scene of border patrol agent Brian Terry.

At Wednesday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on FBI oversight, Mueller addressed allegations that the FBI had engaged in a cover-up at the crime scene.

"There was no third weapon found at the scene. There were two weapons that were found at the scene, not a third. Why there were suggestions as to a third I'm still not certain... But the fact of the matter is there were only two weapons found at the scene," Mueller said, responding to a question by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) about "conspiracy theories" surrounding Terry's death.

Operation Fast and Furious, run by the Phoenix field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives between 2009 and 2011, has come under harsh scrutiny in recent months. The program was implemented to investigate a gun-trafficking network in Arizona. Authorized buyers would purchase guns, smuggle them into Mexican drug cartels, and agents would then track where the guns ended up. However, agents in the program did not always make arrests or seizures right away, leading to the loss of hundreds of weapons.

Terry was killed in Arizona last December near the Mexico border. Two AK-47s, later linked to the Fast and Furious program, were recovered at the scene. Issa, who serves as chair of the House Oversight Committee, has publicly expressed that he believes there was a third gun involved.

When asked by Bob Schieffer of "Face the Nation" in October if he was insinuating that the FBI had tampered with evidence at the scene, Issa responded, "Well, we're not suggesting that, but when you have tickets that are numbered two and three, and there's no ticket one. In other words, the weapon -- one weapon has a two, one has a three on it, there's no one."

He continued, "When agents who were at Brian Terry's funeral made statements to his mother indicating that there were three weapons, when the two weapons that they have tested don't conclusively match up, then you look and say, well, was there a third weapon at the scene?"

Issa has been a vocal critic of the Department of Justice's handling of the Fast and Furious program, most recently at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Dec. 8. During the hearing, Issa questioned Attorney General Eric Holder, pressing him to fire people involved with the operation.

"The Justice Department has already admitted to making a false statement to Congress regarding Operation Fast and Furious and it is incumbent on them to be open and transparent about all aspects of the operation, including facts related to the murder of Agent Terry," Becca Watkins, a spokeswoman for Issa, wrote in an e-mail to HuffPost when asked about Mueller's most recent comments.
