Scotty McCreery's Lip-Sync Snafu At The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade (omg!)

Scotty McCreery attends the 85th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, New York City, November 24, 2011 -- FilmMagic

It appears Lauren Alaina wasn't the only former "American Idol" Season 10 alumnus with song issues on Thursday.

The show's most recent winner, Scotty McCreery, had a very obvious lip-syncing issue while taking part in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

As his song, "The Trouble with Girls" began, following an introduction by "Today's" Matt Lauer, the country star didn't have his mouth open in song, or the microphone near his face as his recorded voice came streaming out of the loud speakers.

The same thing happened for Avril Lavigne, who didn't have the microphone at her mouth as her song, "Wish You Were Here," began.

As for Lauren, as previously reported on AccessHollywood.com , she seemed to forget the lyrics to the National Anthem - "The Star-Spangled Banner" -- going silent for a verse on Thursday at the Lions/Packers game in Detroit.

Later, on Twitter, she took ownership of her mistake.

"Thank you everyone for the kind words," she wrote on Thursday afternoon. "But the truth is I messed up. I'm gonna spend the rest of the day being thankful for all my blessings."

Lukoil's Q3 profit drops 20 pct to $2.2 billion (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's second-largest oil producer Lukoil said Friday that its third-quarter profit dropped 20 percent because of higher taxes and a slump in the ruble.

The Moscow-based company said Friday that the $570 million decline to $2.2 billion had been caused by the depreciation of the Russian ruble. This includes $340 million it spent on tax on foreign currency translation gain.

The Russian ruble, battered by turmoil on European markets, lost about 15 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar between June 30 and September 30 at the MICEX stock exchange.

Lukoil said its net income was affected by writing down the costs of drilling exploratory wells.

The decline in profit stands in contrast to a 26 percent hike in revenues between July and September, to $34.6 billion from $26.5 billion.

The company said its strict financial discipline and efficient costs management helped them generate a cash flow of $7.7 billion in the nine months of the year against slightly under $7 billion a year ago.

Oil analysts at the Moscow-based UralSib investment bank said in a note to investors earlier this week that it expected the results to be worse that of other Russian oil companies, but said it does not expect Lukoil to underperform in the future.

"Compared to its Russian peers, Lukoil is much more exposed to international product markets where product prices are more flexible than on domestic market," UralSib said in the note.

Lukoil's shares were up 2.3 percent at the MICEX, outperforming the market.

Report: Shoppers unfazed as man dies at Target

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

Family and friends were stunned by the loss of a West Virginia man who died while shopping on Black Friday as fellow bargain hunters reportedly walked around?? and even over?? the man?s body.

Family members told WSAZ-TV that 61-year-old Walter Vance of Logan County, W. Va., had become ill and collapsed while shopping for Christmas decorations inside Target in South Charleston. He later died after being taken to the hospital, family said.

Witnesses told the NBC News affiliate in Charleston, W. Wa., that shoppers walked around and even over Vance?s body.

"Where is the good Samaritan side of people?? Vance?s co-worker and friend Sue Compton told WSAZ. ?How could you not notice someone was in trouble? I just don't understand if people didn't help what their reason was, other than greed because of a sale."

Vance had joined?in the crowded frenzy?of deal seekers?at Target?shortly after midnight on Friday. He had been searching for holiday odds and ends to complete his display at his newly remodeled workplace at Aracoma Drug Company store in Chapman, co-worker Annette Fortune told msnbc.com on Saturday.

?He was so excited about Christmas this year, he wanted everyone to enjoy the holiday he loved so much,? Fortune said.

Vance had been working at the Aracoma Drug Company store since he was 16 and later became its co-owner in the 1970s.

Friends say?Vance?had?been suffering from heart problems for years and had open heart surgery in 2000, but his death came as a shock.

An E.R. nurse who also happened to be shopping at the store?tried to administer CPR. She and an off-duty paramedic tried to help Vance while he was on the floor.

?The world lost a wonderful angel,? co-worker Beth Wright told msnbc.com, adding: ?We lost our best friend and our best boss.?

Efforts by WSAZ and msnbc.com ?to reach Target for a statement was unsuccessful.

The traditional start of the holiday gift shopping frenzy known as Black Friday was welcomed by retailers, but there were reports of scuffles, fist-fits and even gunfire as bargain hunters clashed. NBC News' Kristen Dahlgren reports.

Gun issue represents tough politics for Obama (AP)

WASHINGTON ? They are fuzzy about some issues but the Republican presidential candidates leave little doubt about where they stand on gun rights.

Rick Perry and Rick Santorum go pheasant hunting and give interviews before heading out. Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain speak to the National Rifle Association convention. Michele Bachmann tells People magazine she wants to teach her daughters how to shoot because women need to be able to protect themselves. Mitt Romney, after backing some gun control measures in Massachusetts, now presents himself as a strong Second Amendment supporter.

President Barack Obama, on the other hand, is virtually silent on the issue.

He has hardly addressed it since a couple months after the January assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., when he promised to develop new steps on gun safety in response. He still has failed to do so, even as Tucson survivors came to Capitol Hill last week to push for action to close loopholes in the background check system.

Democrats have learned the hard way that embracing gun control can be terrible politics, and the 2012 presidential election is shaping up to underscore just how delicate the issue can be. With the election likely to be decided largely by states where hunting is a popular pastime, like Missouri, Ohio or Pennsylvania, candidates of both parties want to win over gun owners, not alienate them.

For Republicans, that means emphasizing their pro-gun credentials. But for Obama and the Democrats, the approach is trickier.

Obama's history in support of strict gun control measures prior to becoming president makes it difficult for him to claim he's a Second Amendment champion, even though he signed a bill allowing people to take loaded guns into national parks. At the same time, he's apparently decided that his record backing gun safety is nothing to boast of, either, perhaps because of the power of the gun lobby and their opposition to anything smacking of gun control.

The result is that while Republicans are more than happy to talk up their support for gun rights, Obama may barely be heard from on the issue at all.

"Gun control is a fight that the administration is not willing to pick. They're not likely to win it," said Harry Wilson, author of a book on gun politics and director of the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research at Roanoke College in Virginia. "They certainly would not win it in Congress, and it's not likely to be a winner at the polls. ... It comes down to one pretty simple word: Politics."

Administration officials say they are working to develop the gun safety measures promised after the Giffords shooting, and they say have taken steps to improve the background check system. White House spokesman Matt Lehrich says the White House goal is to "protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens while keeping guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them under existing law."

But when it comes to guns and politics, Democrats haven't forgotten what happened in 1994. That year, President Bill Clinton was pushing for passage of a landmark crime bill featuring a ban on assault weapons, and then-House Speaker Thomas Foley, D-Wash., twisted Democrats' arms to get it through the House. Come November, Democrats suffered widespread election losses and lost control of the House and the Senate. Foley was among those defeated, and Clinton and others credited the NRA's campaigning with a big role in the outcome. And when the assault weapons ban came up for congressional reauthorization in 2004, it failed.

Given that history, the NRA expects to see Obama treading carefully on guns through 2012.

"It's bad politics to be on the wrong side of the Second Amendment at election time," said Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president. "They're trying to fog the issue through the 2012 election and deceive gun owners into thinking he's something he's not, which is pro-Second Amendment."

For gun control advocates, it adds up to frustration with Obama and the Democrats. The group Mayors Against Illegal Guns argues that polling shows voters support certain gun safety measures like stronger background checks ? although a recent Gallup poll also finds more support for enforcing current laws than for passing new ones.

"Good policy here is good politics," said John Feinblatt, an adviser to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is a co-chair of the mayors' group. "Unfortunately, for too long the administration has bought the conventional wisdom" that gun control is bad politics.

But the NRA outspends gun-control groups by wide margins, and analysts say that when it comes time to vote, the gun issue is more likely to motivate gun rights activists than gun control supporters.

Since becoming president, Obama has been extremely cautious on the issue. In his 2004 Senate race, for example, Obama said it was a "scandal" that then-President George W. Bush didn't force renewal of the assault weapons ban. But Obama himself has done nothing to promote that issue since becoming president.

Obama's commitment to act on gun safety may also be complicated by an unrelated controversy over a Justice Department program aimed at stanching gun trafficking into Mexico. The government lost track of numerous weapons in connection with the program.

Obama has vowed to figure out what went wrong with the operation and make sure it's corrected, but with Republicans seizing on the issue to attack the White House, the politics around taking action on guns hasn't gotten any easier.

So for now, supporters who hoped to see Obama adopt a stronger stance on guns and act in the wake of the Giffords shooting look like they're going to be disappointed. "We haven't given up hope," said Dennis Henigan, acting president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, "but our impatience is growing with each passing day."

Bachmann: Fallon song choice shows sexism, bias (AP)

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann lashed out Wednesday at NBC for not apologizing or taking immediate disciplinary action for an off-color song played during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night."

In her first comments on the flap, Bachmann said on the Fox News Channel that the Fallon show band displayed sexism and bias by playing a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song as she walked onstage for Tuesday's show. The title of the song is "Lyin' Ass B----."

"This is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite," Bachmann said. She added, "This wouldn't be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama. It shouldn't be tolerated if it's a conservative woman either."

Fallon has tweeted an apology to Bachmann, saying he was "so sorry about the intro mess." Bachmann said she hoped to speak with Fallon later Wednesday and wouldn't mind going on his show again.

But Bachmann expressed surprise that she's heard nothing from the TV network. She suggested that discipline for the show's Roots band was in order.

One of Bachmann's congressional colleagues, New York Democrat Nita Lowey, had called on NBC to apologize for its "insulting and inappropriate" treatment of its guest.

An NBC spokeswoman didn't immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press.

The Roots' bandleader, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, has said the song was a "tongue-in-cheek and spur-of-the-moment decision."

Bachmann, who is lagging in presidential polls, has spent the week promoting her new autobiography in national television interviews.

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

CHICAGO (AP) ? Undeterred by costlier gas and airfare, millions of Americans set out Wednesday to see friends and family in what is expected to be the nation's busiest Thanksgiving weekend since the financial meltdown more than three years ago.

Many people economized rather than stay home.

"We wouldn't think of missing it," said Bill Curtis, a retiree from Los Angeles who was with his wife at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif. "Family is important and we love the holiday. So we cut corners other places so we can afford to travel."

About 42.5 million people are expected to hit the road or take to the skies for Thanksgiving this year, according to travel tracker AAA. That's the highest number since the start of the recession at the end of 2007.

Heavy rain slowed down early travelers along the East Coast. Snow across parts of New England and upstate New York made for treacherous driving and thousands of power outages. And a mudslide covered train tracks in the Pacific Northwest. But most of the country is expected to have clear weather Thursday.

As afternoon traffic picked up, flight delays were reported in Boston, San Francisco, Newark, N.J., and New York.

The average round-trip airfare for the top 40 U.S. routes is $212, up 20 percent from last year. Tickets on most Amtrak one-way routes have climbed slightly, and drivers are paying an average $3.33 a gallon, or 16 percent more than last year, according to AAA.

Jake Pagel, a waiter from Denver, was flying to see his girlfriend's family in San Jose, Calif. He said he had to give up working during one of the restaurant industry's busiest and most profitable times.

"I think it's something you can't quantify in terms of monetary cost," he said. "I mean, being able to spend quality time with your family is fairly significant."

Most travelers ? about 90 percent, according to AAA ? are expected to hit the road.

John Mahoney acknowledged the economy has changed the way he travels, which is why he and his girlfriend slept in their car instead of getting a motel room when a heavy, wet snowstorm flared up along the New York State Thruway during their 20-hour drive from New Hampshire to St. Louis.

"Americans will still do what Americans do. We travel the roads," he said.

Some drivers who tried to get an early start along the Pennsylvania Turnpike found themselves stopped by ? or stuck in ? a gooey, tar-like mess after a tanker truck leaked driveway sealant along nearly 40 miles of highway. At least 150 vehicles were disabled Tuesday night.

Shun Tucker of suburban Chicago decided to spend the holiday with family in Memphis, Tenn., and booked a $49 bus ticket for a nine-hour trip south. "Yeah, I could go to the airport, but it's going to cost me $300," she said.

Lucretia Verner and her cousin set out on a drive from Tulsa, Okla., to Atlanta. They said they wouldn't stop to eat on the way, making do with the water, juice, lunch meat and bread they took with them. Colette Parr of Las Vegas took flights with connections and switched airlines to save almost $200 on her trip to Newark, N.J.

Investment manager Matt Rightmire and his family typically fly on Thanksgiving. This year, they are making the holiday pilgrimage by car from New Hampshire to his in-laws in Youngstown, Ohio. He figured he is saving $1,000.

"It's family," he said. "That's what the holidays are about: Spending time with family. I don't really think it's optional. You may try to find the least expensive way to get there, but you've got to see your family."

Kevin Bacon's closer than you think, Facebook finds folks separated by only 4.74 degrees

Facebook's fertile ground for social experiments, and it wasn't all that long ago that Yahoo tested the six degrees of separation theory using the site. Not to be outdone, Mark Zuckerberg's crew, with an assist from the Laboratory for Web Algorithmics of the Universita degli Studi di Milano, has done a little digging of its own to find out just how intertwined its 721 million users really are. Turns out, instead of being six degrees away from your favorite dancing actor, you're likely only 4.74 -- which was the average distance between any two Facebook users globally. Considering that number shrinks to three when limited to relationships within your own country, and the worldwide number was at 5.28 in 2008 (and is shrinking all the time), you should be best friends with Kevin Bacon by 2020 or so. Don't believe us? There's plenty of statistical analysis to prove it at the source below.

Two sex-spread diseases increase, syphilis down (AP)

ATLANTA ? Cases of some common sexually spread diseases continue to increase in the United States, but the syphilis rate dropped last year for the first time in a decade.

Health officials on Thursday released their annual report on sexually transmitted disease, and found chlamydia and gonorrhea rates continued to grow last year.

More than 1.3 million cases of chlamydia were reported last year ? the largest number ever reported in one year for any condition. The number of new gonorrhea cases surpassed 300,000.

Fewer than 14,000 Americans were reported last year to have the most contagious forms of syphilis. While the number affected is fairly small, the rate of new cases had been increasing since 2001, but dropped by about 2 percent in 2010.

Global markets: Asian shares fall as euro zone yields rise (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Asian shares fell on Tuesday, as a rise in euro zone bond yields reflected lingering doubts about the ability of politicians in Italy and Greece to push through painful reforms to resolve their debt crises and win market confidence.

Jittery European credit markets also hurt sentiment in Asia, sharply widening the spreads on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment grade index -- a gauge of investor appetite for risk. The spread was about 10 basis points wider on Tuesday.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.5 percent, tracking a drop in global equity markets the previous day, while Japan's Nikkei stock average (.N225) fell 0.4 percent.

"Italy can't find buyers to finance its debt, as fears over high price volatility in Italian bonds and speculators hitting shares of banks with huge exposure to Italy have made European financial institutions, traditionally long-term investors, wary of purchases," said Takashi Nakagawa, a senior credit analyst at Daiwa Capital Markets.

Italy sold 3 billion euros ($4.1 billion) of five-year bonds at 6.29 percent on Monday, a euro-era record, fuelling worries the high borrowing costs would derail the country's efforts to slash its 1.9 trillion euro worth of debt.

Yields on benchmark Italian 10-year bonds climbed to 14-year highs of around 7.5 percent last week before Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi stepped down.

Italy's 10-year bond yields rose to 6.76 percent on Monday, also pushing Spanish 10-year yields above 6 percent for the first time since the European Central Bank started to buy the country's bonds in August.

The spread, or interest rate gap, of Italian bonds over German government bonds remained just below 500 basis points.

"Global financial markets are facing a key pivotal point," said Barclays Capital analysts in a research note.

"A further escalation of the European debt crisis is putting at risk the nascent stabilization of global growth and the associated buoyancy of risky assets outside of Europe," they said, adding the European authorities could limit the damage through more involvement of the European Central Bank.

But Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann on Monday rebuffed such global pressure for the ECB to become a lender of last resort, saying it could undermine the central bank's hard-won credibility.

CAPITAL BOOST

Sharp downturns in financial markets have raised the urgent need for recapitalization at banks, prompting them to sell assets to make up for losses elsewhere.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index (.HSI) fell 0.7 percent, with China Construction Bank Corp (0939.HK) dragging the market lower. Shares in CCB fell 2 percent on Tuesday after Bank of America (BAC.N) decided to sell most of its remaining stake in the Chinese lender to shore up its capital.

There was better news in Chinese debt markets, with the city of Shanghai attracting very strong demand as it became the first local government to sell debt directly into the market, signaling keen investor interest in the new type of instrument.

After Shanghai's inaugural sale, the southern province of Guangdong plans to issue 6.9 billion yuan in bonds on Friday.

Financial market turmoil stemming from the euro zone sovereign debt crisis has taken a clear toll on the region's economy, with investors seeking clues over whether the euro zone could face a recession.

Later on Tuesday, the first estimate of euro-area gross domestic product for the third quarter will be published, following the region's industrial production data released on Monday, which showed a 2 percent decline in September.

The slide was the biggest fall since February 2009, and pointed to a sharp contraction toward the end of the year and a growing threat of a fall into recession.

Leadership changes in Italy and Greece failed to dispel market worries about their ability to resolve the debt crisis,

putting a firm cap on the single currency against the dollar.

The euro traded at $1.3626 on Tuesday, after falling as low as $1.3590 on Monday, when it broke below support at its 100-week moving average around $1.3638.

The currency was expected to find support around the low in September around $1.3360, while resistance was seen near $1.3870, a November high, technical analysts said.

Review: Kindle Fire sacrifices to get under $200 (AP)

NEW YORK ? The Kindle was always an odd product name. Amazon used a verb to name a thing, raising the question: Kindle what? Now we have the answer: Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire is the first full-color, touch-screen Kindle. It's available in the U.S. starting Monday for $199.

A price like that for what's essentially a small iPad is bound to light the flames of desire this holiday season. I want to cool those down a bit, or some of you will buy the Fire and feel burned.

The Fire is the best Kindle yet, no doubt about it. It's amazing that it costs half of what the first Kindle cost, just four years ago, yet does so much more than display books.

It's more of an all-purpose computer than an e-reader. It shows movies, TV shows and Web pages. It does email and lets you play games. You'll be lucky to get any reading done, with so many other things to do.

But it has to be weighed against the competition. When you do that, it becomes apparent just how spare Amazon had to keep the device to limbo under that $200 price level.

The Kindle's design is even starker than the iPad's. It's a black monolith with only one button ? the power switch ? and two jacks, for headphones and power. All the controls are on the screen.

The screen measures 7 inches diagonally, a bit larger than the monochrome Kindles and a bit less than half the size of the iPad's. The smaller size does make the Fire more portable than an iPad; it will fit nicely into a handbag, for instance.

The size of the screen wasn't much of an issue on the monochrome Kindles because they were mainly good for showing text anyway. But the responsive color screen of the Fire opens up a lot of possibilities, such as showing magazine and comic-book pages.

Here, the small size of the screen gets in the way. It's just too far from standard page sizes to do them justice. Magazine pages look tiny. Amazon has to jump through some hoops to make them readable, like including a mode that shows just the text. But flicking through a magazine is still a lot of work ? and that's one thing that should not be like work.

Barnes & Noble's Nook Color, launched last year, has the same problem ? a nice color screen that's too small. The iPad gets it right, for a few hundred dollars more.

While we're on the subject of "too small," let's talk about the Fire's memory. It has 8 gigabytes of storage. That's enough for more books than you'll ever read, but 10 movies will eat up the whole thing.

The cheapest iPad, which costs $499, has twice as much memory. The Nook Color, which costs $199, also has 8 gigabytes, but it comes with a slot for memory expansion with cheap cards. I don't understand why the Fire doesn't have a slot like that. The very first Kindle did. There's no step-up model of the Fire with more memory.

Amazon says the Fire doesn't need more memory because the company provides an online storage locker, where you can stuff all your music and other content. That works when you have Wi-Fi coverage, but not otherwise ? the Fire doesn't have the ability to use cellular networks, as some of the monochrome models do.

The Fire also lacks a camera and a microphone. Those aren't things you'd expect in an e-reader (the Nook also lacks them). But they are standard features on tablets and are quite useful, particularly for videoconferencing. Their absence is forgivable at $199.

The color screen means, inevitably, that battery life suffers compared with e-readers that use power-sipping monochrome screens. Amazon puts the reading time at eight hours, compared with about 30 hours for the new $99 Kindle Touch, which has a monochrome, touch-sensitive screen and is designed just for reading.

The Fire's software is based on Google Inc.'s Android software, used in smartphones and a bevy of tablets that compete with the iPad. None has really caught on, except to some extent the Nook Color. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says this is because the other tablets lack an ecosystem of the kind Apple provides in iTunes: an integrated market for books, movies, music and applications.

Amazon has done a good job of setting up its own store. Buying and downloading books and movies is a quick process ? as long as you're buying them from Amazon.

People complain about how Apple dictates the terms of access to the iPhone and iPad, but Amazon's Kindles have always been more restrictive, and the Fire is only a slight departure from that strategy.

You can't buy copy-protected books from anyone but Amazon and expect to read them on the Fire, as you can on the iPad. Even the Nooks allow third-party books. Amazon achieves this control by operating its own app store, separate from the Android Market run by Google. Clever people will figure out a way to bypass this and install any app they want, but most people won't want to bother.

To Amazon's credit, it's allowing the excellent Comixology comics app onto the Fire. That means you don't have to buy your comics from Amazon, and you aren't restricted to the Fire's built-in (and inferior) comics browser. It's also letting the apps for the Netflix and Hulu streaming services onto the device, in competition with Amazon's own streaming service.

So the Fire does justice to fiction and movies, but the iPad does better in almost every way, particularly in the selection of apps, which is about 50 times greater than the Fire's.

If the step up to $499 is too much, you might want to consider the Nook Tablet, which comes out Friday. At $249, it will be the same size as the Fire, but with twice the memory, plus a memory expansion slot. It won't access all of Amazon's goodies and apps, but it will have Netflix and Hulu. Take a look at it before jumping to the Fire.

Army defectors attack Syria security complex

Syrian army defectors attacked an intelligence complex on the edge of Damascus early on Wednesday, the first such reported assault on a major security facility in the eight-month uprising against President Bashar Assad, activists said.

Members of the Free Syrian Army fired shoulder-mounted rockets and machine guns at a large Air Force Intelligence complex situated on the northern edge of the capital at about 2.30 a.m. local time (7.30 p.m. Tuesday ET), it said in a statement.

The renegade group said the other attacks targeted military checkpoints in the Damascus suburbs of Douma, Qaboun and Arabeen and Saqba.

The claim of the attacks could not be independently confirmed and the Free Syrian Army released no details about the fighting or possible casualties.

Attacks near Damascus are rare, and clashes between defectors and troops have in the past been concentrated in the northwestern province of Idlib and central region of Homs and the southern province of Daraa.

The attacks are the latest sign of growing pressure on Assad both within Syria and from other countries, including the U.S.

Syria said it would boycott a Wednesday Arab League meeting following the body's decision to suspend Damascus from the organization.

'Strong stance'
The White House welcomed Turkey's announcement that it was considering economic sanctions against its former ally Syria, including shutting off cross-border electricity supplies.

"We very much welcome the strong stance that Turkey has taken and believe it sends a critical message to President Assad that he cannot crack down and oppress the aspirations of his people," deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama.

"Frankly, we think it reinforces the fact that he should step down, because that is in the best interests of the Syrian people," Rhodes told reporters as Obama flew toward Australia on an Asian tour .

With armed resistance mounting against Assad's rule, alongside mostly peaceful protests, hundreds of Syrians have been killed this month in one of the bloodiest periods of the revolt, inspired by uprisings which have overthrown leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

A senior Saudi prince told an audience in Washington D.C. late on Tuesday that President Assad's refusal to halt violence against his own people has made his departure from power inevitable.

Prince Turki al-Faisal, the former chief of Saudi intelligence services and a former ambassador to Washington and London, said: "Inevitably, I think, the lack of response of Mr. Assad to all the efforts made to end the fighting in Syria means that he's taken the view of not accepting these matters.

"In that context, there will be growing popular opposition to him, and killing every day. I think it's inevitable that he will have to step down in one form or another."

The meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Rabat, Morocco, comes four days after they decided to discipline Syria for pursuing a crackdown on opposition instead of implementing an Arab peace initiative.

The Arab League has stopped short of calling for Assad's departure or proposing any Libya-style military intervention.

Video: Syrian authorities seize weapons (on this page)

Morocco's foreign minister said "Syrian colleagues" were welcome at the meeting but did not say if Syria's foreign minister could attend.

Syrian soldiers killed at least six civilians on Tuesday, shooting from roadblocks in the northwestern province of Idlib and in raids on the central city of Homs and its environs, activists said. Several deaths also were reported in fighting between army defectors and loyalist forces on both sides.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bodies of three young activists who were killed in custody were delivered to their families on Tuesday, including 23-year-old Osama al-Sheikh Youssef.

"The family collected the body from Tishreen Military Hospital on the condition of a quiet burial. Security police in plainclothes stood on top of Osama watching as we lowered him into the ground," an activist who attended the funeral said.

Syrian authorities have banned most independent media. They blame the unrest on "armed terrorist gangs" and foreign-backed militants whom they say have killed 1,100 soldiers and police. The United Nations say the crackdown has killed 3,500.

Christian minority
An Arab official, who did not want to be named, said insurgent attacks on loyalist forces rose sharply in the last 10 days, although the army remains largely cohesive.

Unlike more homogeneous Arab countries, Syria is a majority Muslim country ruled by an elite from Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam who dominate the state, the military and the security apparatus underpinning the power structure.

The country of 20 million has one million ethnic Kurds and an established Christian minority, as well as Alawites, Druze, and Ismailis.

Video: Armed attacks in Syria growing (on this page)

Wary of repercussions if Assad were to fall, and taking into account Syria's geopolitical position at the faultlines of Middle East conflicts, Arab officials have been hesitant to criticize Assad directly or call for fundamental political change in Syria.

The league, however, voted to suspend Syria's membership from Wednesday, and asked Syrian opposition groups to draw up plans for a transition of power, as a prelude to a wider gathering on Syria's future planned by the Cairo-based body.

Arab ostracism is a particularly bitter blow for Assad, who has always seen himself as a champion of Arab unity. Damascus says it is committed to the Arab peace initiative, which calls for a ceasefire and dialogue with the opposition.

However, Russia, one of Syria's last few foreign friends, last month joined China to block a U.N. Security Council resolution that would have condemned Assad's crackdown, and has accused the West of discouraging dialogue in Syria.

Smartphone Prices Shrink as First-Time Buyer Numbers Increase

Smartphones used to be reserved for those wealthy enough to fork over hundreds of dollars for a handset -- and over a grand each year to actually use said handset over a data connection. But the times they are a-changin'. Although the iPhone dominated smartphone sales last quarter -- with the iPhone 4 and 3GS taking the number one and two spots, respectively -- a new trend is taking shape: super-cheap smartphones for the masses.

Portland police arrest over 50 as protest camps cleared (Reuters)

PORTLAND, Ore (Reuters) ? Portland Police arrested more than 50 people on Sunday as the authorities cleared out and blocked off encampments of the Occupy movement that has been protesting nationwide over economic issues.

The Portland actions were among several by authorities around the country over the weekend to try to close down encampments occupied by demonstrators for weeks.

Encampments sprang up in several cities in recent weeks in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York in September to protest what demonstrators see as economic inequality and undue political influence by corporate interests.

In Portland the authorities had issued an eviction notice, and then moved to empty the camps and fence them off. Many protesters left on their own after the notice, but others chose to stay.

A police statement said: "the Portland Police Bureau has cleared both Chapman and Lownsdale Square parks. During today's operation, more than 50 arrests were made of people who either wanted to be arrested or refused to leave Chapman Square."

There were no injuries during the park clearance, police said.

But demonstrators regrouped in the streets, blocking traffic for hours in a standoff with ranks of Portland Police officers in riot gear.

The confrontation continued into late afternoon, but as darkness fell protesters left the streets.

A core group moved to a downtown square for speeches and to discuss their next moves and where they would spend the night, as a light rain hit the city.

More than 300 officers, including those from 10 other law enforcement agencies, had participated in the authorities' actions during the day, Portland Police said.

On the protester side, an estimated thousand people joined in demonstrating in the streets.

FACE-TO-FACE

During the afternoon confrontation police, face-to-face with the protesters, repeatedly told them that if they didn't move out of the road, or appeared to resist arrest, chemical agents and impact weapons -- apparently beanbag guns -- might be used.

On their side the protesters chanted: "I don't see no riot here, take off your riot gear," "The whole world is watching," and "We are peaceful people."

Officials also moved over the weekend to dismantle a protest camp in Salt Lake City, Utah, while in Denver, police on Saturday removed mattresses, cooking grills and tents illegally placed on a public sidewalk.

Seventeen people were arrested, Denver police said on Sunday.

This weekend's actions were the latest as officials in a number of cities have cited health and safety issues in urging Occupy demonstrators to take down their camps, or as the basis for police actions to shut them down.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams in comments to CNN on Sunday linked that city's camps to increases in crime and drug overdoses, and said an arsonist had used a camp as camouflage for his efforts.

While Adams expressed sympathy for protester goals, he said the Occupy movement needed to evolve beyond encampments "in order to get the kind of reforms we need."

In Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter on Sunday ordered beefed-up police patrols at the city's protest site, saying conditions were "dramatically deteriorating."

"This movement has changed and the people have changed," he said. "We are now at a critical point where we must reevaluate our entire relationship with this very changed group."

In Salt Lake City authorities moved to dismantle a camp at a downtown park and arrested 15 people on Saturday.

In Oakland, California, the scene of previous clashes between police and demonstrators, city hall issued a third eviction notice on Sunday. It warned protesters they faced "immediate arrest" if they continued to camp out in the city's plaza and parks.

The city offered alternative emergency accommodation at two local area homeless shelters, and laid on a shuttle service to one that was not within walking distance of the encampments.

In St. Louis, Mayor Francis Slay has warned protesters they have to decamp but has offered to continue talks to find a permanent place for the protest.

Oscars Academy honors Vanessa Redgrave in London (AP)

LONDON ? Hollywood's film academy is honoring acting icon Vanessa Redgrave at a star-studded ceremony in London.

Meryl Streep, Ralph Fiennes and James Earl Jones are scheduled to join Sunday's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tribute to Redgrave's 50-year career.

A member of a famous British acting dynasty, Redgrave is also known for her left-wing political activism.

The 74-year-old actress has been nominated for six Oscars and won for her supporting role as an anti-Nazi activist in 1977's "Julia."

In her acceptance speech, she praised the academy for not bowing to "Zionist hoodlums" who had objected to the nomination because of her support for the Palestinian cause.

She is currently starring in London's West End alongside Jones in "Driving Miss Daisy."

CMAs kick off with Hank Williams Jr. jokes

It's Jason Aldean's party at the Country Music Association Awards, but a melancholy song about dying young by rising stars The Band Perry is the early surprise.

Country music's biggest night Wednesday started with unexpected appearances by Hank Williams Jr., Barbie dolls of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and plenty of crossover appeal. But it was Kimberly Perry's poignant song "If I Die Young" that was everyone's focus.

"It's just always felt like a song that was meant to be here," Perry said as she was flanked by brothers and bandmates Reid and Neil Perry. "I was so excited to have a pen and paper in hand when it was ready to come to Earth."

The band is also up for new artist of the year honors which will be handed out later in the evening.

Aldean won his first major CMA award, taking album of the year for "My Kinda Party," his platinum-selling album. The CD also included "Don't You Wanna Stay," his duet with Kelly Clarkson, which won musical event of the year.

Blake Shelton and Kenny Loggins opened the show with a high-energy version of Loggins' hit "Footloose," quickly establishing a theme for what is a very eclectic night.

Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter continued that trend when they won video of the year for their steamy "You and Tequila."

Lionel Richie had every star buzzing on the red carpet before performing duets from his new country album with Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker and Little Big Town. He posed for a picture with Miranda Lambert and gave advice to Lady Antebellum on the red carpet. Chesney told him he used Richie's songs on a mixtape he gave a girl in high school.

Gregg Allman joined fellow Peach State natives Zac Brown Band on "Georgia on my Mind," Natasha Bedingfield, in a dress that featured a fluffy red skirt, joined Rascal Flatts on stage to perform their duet "Easy," and that was just the start of genre shuffling.

"Gregg Allman, I was the one who reached out and touched you on the red carpet," Jennifer Nettles said from the stage after Sugarland won vocal duo of the year for the fifth straight time. "He didn't know who I was, but I really like you."

Williams appeared during the opening skit Wednesday night with hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, who lampooned his recent troubles with ESPN and his "Monday Night Football" theme song. Paisley brought out an acoustic guitar and began his own version of "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight."

Slideshow: Taylor Swift (on this page)

"Are you ready for an awards show?" Paisley sang before Underwood warned him he might draw Williams' ire.

As they spoke, Williams quietly walked up behind the hosts to the roar from the crowd. Asked if he wanted to say something, Williams said, "No," to the delight of the audience.

It was just one of several laugh-out-loud moments for the hosts, who trotted out Barbies of McGraw and Hill after Williams left the stage.

"I can't wait until after the show," Paisley said to Underwood. "Can we play with them now?"

The two made the dolls kiss and before checking to see if the McGraw doll was anatomically correct. "There's nothing there," Paisley said in amazement.

The camera cut to McGraw and Hill, who raised her arms and mouthed the words, "I know," receiving the night's biggest laugh.

Kirsten Dunst rises out of "Melancholia" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Kirsten Dunst steps out of her comfort zone and deep into a paralyzing depression in her latest film "Melancholia."

Better known for light fare like "Spider-Man" and romantic comedies, Dunst plays the lead in the part science-fiction, part family drama from Danish director Lars von Trier, which opens in select U.S. cities on Friday.

The actress, 29, found herself challenged with intense emotional scenes and nudity while portraying Justine -- a complex bride who deteriorates into a melancholic depression after getting married and immediately regretting it.

"It's a very vulnerable part and there are very difficult scenes, but the environment was very comfortable," said Dunst.

"Anything I had to do, which I may not have felt comfortable with in a different setting, felt protected so I could let loose and be open," the actress added.

Complicated female characters and visually arresting images have become a trademark for von Trier, who cast Nicole Kidman in the 2003 thriller "Dogville" and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the 2009 supernatural movie "Antichrist".

Dunst called von Trier "one of the great directors of our time." He, in turn, drew a performance from Dunst that won her the best actress award at the Cannes film festival and is now earning talk of a possible first Oscar nomination.

It is the best critical acclaim Dunst has experienced since her performance as a 12-year-old in the 1994 drama "Interview With the Vampire" alongside Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

New York Times movie reviewer A.O. Scott said the actress "is remarkably effective at conveying both the acute anguish and the paralyzing hollowness of depression."

END OF THE WORLD

"Melancholia" is an apocalyptic tale of sisters Justine (Dunst) and Claire (Gainsbourg) set against an epic backdrop, when Earth's existence is threatened by the approach of the planet Melancholia. Alexander Skarsgard and Keifer Sutherland co-star.

The film is divided into two sections named after the sisters, and moves from light, celebratory scenes of Justine's wedding to darker anxieties, accompanied by arresting cinematography and Richard Wagner's dramatic operatic score of "Tristan and Isolde."

Justine's depression and mental decline make her reliant on the strength of her sister Claire. But as the mysterious planet Melancholia slowly edges its way on a collision course with Earth, Justine finds herself becoming stronger while her sister crumbles.

"I kind of envisioned it as Justine comes from this planet that's going to hit Earth, and this is her mother Earth in some way," Dunst said.

The actress believes the overall message of the film is a comforting one, despite its melancholic overtones.

"This film is very personal to everyone, but I think it's very comforting for anyone who's gone through any depression in their lives," she said. "It's exciting to experience a movie like that."

Dunst has more than 60 films under her belt in a career that has seen her transition from child actress to Hollywood star in movies such as "Crazy/Beautiful," "Marie Antoinette" and the "Spider-Man" franchise.

"I could retire, and I'd be proud," laughed the actress.

However, she isn't quite ready to step away from the spotlight. She wants to portray iconic characters like Marlene Dietrich, or Blondie singer Debbie Harry.

"Blondie was going to happen at one point and I'd still like to do that. She was successful in her thirties, so that would be fun to play," said Dunst, adding, "Don't worry, I'm not going to put out an album, I'm going to stick to acting."

The actress will next be seen in an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road", and alongside British actor Jim Sturgess in sci-fi romance "Upside Down."

Mexico says key figure in Tijuana drug gang caught (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? One of the main operators in a drug cartel war that devastated the border city of Tijuana was captured by federal troops after he opened fire on a car carrying two rivals over the weekend, officials said Monday.

Juan Francisco Sillas Rocha, 34, allegedly reported directly to the head of the Arellano Felix cartel, which controlled the smuggling of cocaine, marijuana and other drugs through the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali into the United States during the 1990s, according to Mexican officials.

The cartel was weakened in the last decade by the capture or killing of the brothers who led it. The powerful Sinaloa Cartel, which controls many of the smuggling routes along the border, has reportedly tried to seize control of criminal activities in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, California.

Fernando "The Engineer" Sanchez Arellano, a nephew who now heads the Arellano Felix cartel, ordered Sillas to regain control of Tijuana from rival leader Teodoro "El Teo" Garcia Simental, who had broken from the Arellano Felix group and reportedly rose through the Sinaloa ranks by ordering bodies dissolved in vats of lye.

Fighting between the factions sent violence skyrocketing in Tijuana from 2007 to 2009, and decapitations, hangings and daylight shootouts had became common.

Violence subsided considerably after Simental's arrest in January 2010, although attacks still occur regularly.

Army spokesman Col. Ricardo Trevilla said Sillas shot and wounded two unidentified rivals driving through Tijuana on Saturday.Police and soldiers captured him after cordoning off the area.

Sillas, who was paraded before a press conference Monday, is presumed responsible for the 2010 kidnapping of three women in the family of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who leads the Sinaloa cartel along with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the most-wanted men in the world. Sillas was believed to be retaliating for the disappearance of his sister that year.

Trevilla said Sillas' arrest will "considerably affect the Arellano Felix organization's criminal activities."

Also Monday, police found the heads of two men in a residential area of Mexico City.

The heads were left on a corner in Tacuba neighborhood. Police found the bodies inside a stolen car not far from there, prosecutors said in a statement.

Prosecutors said police also found a threatening note but they wouldn't reveal its content.

Authorities say a spate of killings and decapitations in the capital that began late last year comes from street gangs fighting for an increasingly lucrative local drug market.
