Taxable retail sales increased 2.9 percent to $25.6 billion during the second quarter of 2011 compared to year-earlier results, the Washington State Department of Revenue reported Oct. 7.
Retail trade, a component of all taxable retail sales that counts only retail store sales and excludes other sectors such as construction and services, also grew 3.7 percent to $11.7 billion.
Among major industries, construction continued its decline, dropping 5.5 percent to $3.7 billion; accommodations and food services rose 5.8 percent to $3 billion; and motor vehicles and parts rose 6.9 percent to $2.5 billion. Taxable sales by general merchandise stores edged up 0.4 percent to $2.3 billion.
In Chelan County, taxable retail sales decreased 1.6 percent to $327.8 million from 2010. The biggest decrease came from the construction sector which dropped 26 percent (mostly in the area of building construction) to $46 million. Retail trade sales dropped only slightly 0.78 percent to $144.7 million.
In Douglas County, the opposite story was true.
Taxable retail sales increased 18.6 percent to $128 million, with the majority of that gain coming from the construction industry, which grew 67 percent to $23.4 million. The lion?s share of that came from building construction. Retail trade in Douglas County also grew 17 percent to $67 million ? a $10 million gain that came almost entirely from the sale of electronics and appliances by out-of-state companies.
