Obsession of Teachers with Homework - Education - EzineMark

Homework has been a part of the lives of the students since several decades. Teachers keep assigning homework to the students to enhance their learning and development. There are also numerous debates that surround the benefits and disadvantages of homework. People are often found arguing over this issue and determining if homework should be given or not. There is no doubt to the fact that homework is beneficial to the student. It helps them in practicing and analyzing the things they are taught in the classroom. They also get to enhance their confidence, self-esteem and the energy of doing homework. But at times homework is not even required. There are various situations when homework is actually not needed. In such times, homework becomes more of an obsession of the teachers than their requirement.

Teachers have this habit of assigning homework.

They have been doing it since few years and hence it has become more of a habit for them. So, even if they have a choice of either giving or not giving the homework, they tend to choose the earlier option because that is what they are good at. They succumb to this habit of theirs and thus start doing it. I am not saying that all the teachers assign homework only out of habit all the time but yes there is an obsession related to the same. Teachers do get used to a certain style of teaching and assessing the children and thus tend to follow the same always. Also, homework seems to be an easy way out. If teachers adopt some other methodology for analyzing the learning of the students, they would have to work towards it and put in extra efforts for developing those assignments or tests? but homework seems to be an easy way out.

Hence, the teachers need to realize that homework is ultimately given for the benefits of the students and if they are giving only out of habit or obsession, it is not going to be advantageous to any one of them.

What they can do is consult students and their parents to get their perspectives as well. This will help them in devising new strategies and coming up with innovative solutions so that the students can use them for their learning and complete development and growth. New approaches and strategies would also keep the interest of the students while benefitting them. Thus, if you really want to provide help for homework, make sure you leave your obsession and work towards improving and enhancing the learning of the students. This is the real help that you can provide to the students because it will make their lives simpler and more interesting.
